Are you interested in trying yoga but aren’t sure it’s for
you, are intimidated by the studio atmosphere, don’t have a gym membership or
don’t want to shell out the cash for a class? Here in NYC there are many
opportunities for Yoga virgins to dabble with Downward Dog or test out their
Trikonasana (Triangle Pose), especially during the Summer season! Or add spice
to your regular workout routine with Tai Chi, running or dance…
Lululemon Loves Their
Neighbors: According to the Lululemon Athletica website, “all lululemon
locations hold events and classes that are unique to their neighbourhood.” My
fave Lulu spot, a showroom in Park Slope, Brooklyn, holds free weekly classes
in the shop that move to Prospect Park during the Summer months. All classes
are an hour long and taught by experienced and personable instructors from
studios in the area. I always have a great experience when I drop into my local
Lululemon for a class. The showroom also hosts a free Run Club. Head to the
Lululemon website now and click “Community” to find a location near you and
check out a free class!
Bryant Park Workouts
(+ other free events): Each year at Summertime, Bryant Park opens up their
lawn and terraces to a number of fun and free weekly events, including yoga
(brought to you by Lululemon Athletica), Tai-Chi and dance. The park also hosts musical performances, language classes, movies and much more. Check out the Bryant Park Calendar
and make a date for fitness and culture in the heart of Manhattan!
Times Square Solstice:
On June 20, the Times Square Alliance and Athleta will present the 10th
Anniversary of Mind Over Madness Yoga, an all day yoga event where “attendees
will be challenged to find tranquility and transcendence in the midst of the
world’s most commercial and frenetic place” and can also “enjoy musical
performances, giveaways and more.” My mom and I attended this event together
last year, had such a good time and are still using the souvenir tote bags and
yoga mats we were given. Pre-register for one of four open-level yoga classes
at the Time Square Alliance site.
