5 Tips to Avoid Coming Home from Vacation with Souvenir Pounds!

At this time every year I just can't help but write about travel. Not only is everyone planning and setting off on vacation, not only do I have a major passion for seeing the world, but I also love sharing my tips for eating well and staying in shape while having an adventure and not feeling like you are missing out on anything.

I was bitten by the travel bug when my husband (then boyfriend) and I celebrated our college graduation by backpacking Western Europe for four weeks. Over the years, I've learned that I get the most out of a trip, and come home feeling the best, when I take a whole mind & body approach to my travels by combining the adventure of seeing the world with the rejuvenating benefits of healthy eating and staying active. Here's how to discover new cultures, get some R&R and still make healthy choices.

1. Do As The [insert the locals of your choice] Do. Grocery stores and farmers markets let you get a real sense of the community while offering the fresh produce, whole grains and healthy snacks that may be harder to find elsewhere. You can also choose to eat "at home." Even in foreign countries, many hotels and B&Bs offer familiar nutritious breakfast foods, like oatmeal and eggs, that provide the fiber and protein you need to keep you full and energized as you tour the town. These are also cheaper ways to eat on vacation. If your room comes with breakfast you might as well take advantage of it, even to get something small in your belly before taking off for the day.

2. Try Sightseeing On The Move. After a kayak tour in Seattle and horseback riding lesson in Argentina, my husband and I decided to always try a new physical activity on our trips. You can take in the sights with a simple hike, bike ride or rollerblading session. Local newspapers, magazines and tourism websites will often list free outdoor workouts and activities.

3. Sip, Sip, Sip. Long walks and prolonged sun exposure can lead to dehydration if you aren't paying attention. (That month in Europe? I fainted on a hot train in Italy!) Also, thirst can disguise itself as hunger. Drinking plenty of water and unsweetened tea and coffee can keep you hydrated and prevent you from overindulging (though a little indulgence on vacation is probably not a bad thing!).

4. Embrace the Portable Workout. A quick internet search will connect you with an endless sea of free downloadable podcast, video and printable workouts that you can do in your hotel room or in a public park.

5. Pump up the Protein. Try to include protein at every meal and snack to keep you feeling satisfied and fueled up. Not only will you have plenty of energy for exploring but the more satisfied you feel the less compelled you will feel to snack on every treat that crosses your path! Meat, chicken & fish are good but so are yogurt, cheese, milk, beans, peas, nuts and seeds. Protein comes in so many forms that you should be able to get enough regardless of the local cuisine.
